When you volunteer in a nursing home you're almost guaranteed to make a few new friends. They may not be your usual crowd, but at one time -- believe it or not -- they were your age, and they can probably teach you a thing or two about life.

I first volunteered in my local assisted living homes when I started at Miller Street Dance Academy. As a team, we dance for the residents and bring cards to the residents to lift their spirits. They always ask when we will be back and say that they love to see us dance! Many seniors in assisted living homes do not get many visitors, so when children come to talk to them and interact with them it brightens their day.

Whether you sing and dance for the residents, play games or participate in activities with the residents, or just bring cards and talk to them, the residents will truly appreciate it and enjoy their time with you! Another way to brighten their spirits is to help decorate the table or other common areas in the homes. Something as simple as a red table cloth for Valentine's Day goes a long way to showing the residents that someone is looking out for them and to lifting their spirits.
