When adults respond quickly and consistently to bullying behavior they send the message that it is not acceptable. Research shows this can stop bullying behavior over time.

Parents, school staff, and other adults in the community can help kids prevent bullying by talking about it, building a safe school environment, and creating a community-wide bullying prevention strategy.

Emma's Project is a dedicated website and blog committed to raising awareness about the issues that cause bullying and advocating for the crucial factors that play a significant role in its prevention, both inside and outside the classroom. This platform serves as an accessible hub for information on mentorship and anti-bullying strategies, providing educators, parents, and community leaders with valuable resources to teach children about the importance of kindness, respect, and self-worth without the need for extensive searching. The blog complements the website by discussing these issues in depth and offering practical solutions for common challenges faced by parents and teachers.

Having grown up as the daughter of a classroom teacher turned administrator, I have been immersed in discussions about kindness and respect from a young age. My experiences volunteering in classrooms and mentoring children since the second grade have shown me the profound impact bullying can have on young lives. These experiences have fueled my mission to promote positive change in schools and communities. Through years of volunteering, mentoring, and collaborating with school counselors in my mom's schools, I have developed a comprehensive approach to addressing bullying and fostering a positive environment. Emma's Project is built on the principles of empathy, mutual respect, mindfulness, and advocacy. By joining this mission, you can help create a safer, more inclusive world for everyone. Each week, I share insights and strategies on how we can collectively stand up against bullying and nurture a culture where empathy and respect are paramount.

Empowering Children to Combat Bullying

Bullying is unwanted, aggressive behavior among school-aged children that involves a real or perceived power imbalance. The behavior is repeated, or has the potential to be repeated, over time. Both kids who are bullied and who bully others may have serious, lasting problems.

The 2017 School Crime Supplement (National Center for Education Statistics and Bureau of Justice) indicates that, nationwide, about 20% of students ages 12-18 experienced bullying.

The 2017 Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) indicates that, nationwide, 19% of students in grades 9–12 report being bullied on school property in the 12 months preceding the survey.

Parents, school staff, and other caring adults have a role to play in preventing bullying. They can:

~ Help kids understand bullying. Talk about what bullying is and how to stand up to it safely. Tell kids bullying is unacceptable. Make sure kids know how to get help.

~ Keep the lines of communication open. Check-in with kids often. Listen to them. Know their friends, ask about school, and understand their concerns.

~ Encourage kids to do what they love. Special activities, interests, and hobbies can boost confidence, help kids make friends, and protect them from bullying behavior.

~ Model how to treat others with kindness and respect.
