My Story

Why Mentoring Matters to Me

Service has always been part of my story — long before it became a platform.

I was first introduced to community service in first grade, when representatives from the Ronald McDonald House visited my classroom. They shared how they support families during some of the most challenging moments of their lives. That day, I went home and told my mom I wanted to help too. I didn’t realize it at the time, but that moment planted the seed for what would eventually become Mentoring Matters.

As I grew older, service continued to shape my life. Through my dance studio, I became involved in a Service Society that emphasized giving back through fundraising, volunteer projects, and community partnerships. Dance taught me discipline, confidence, and leadership — but service taught me empathy, responsibility, and the power of showing up for others.

As I gained more volunteer experience, one thing became clear: the most meaningful impact happens through relationships.

That realization led to the evolution of my Community Service Initiative — from Hearts Building Homes to Mentoring Matters. While my early service focused on hands-on volunteerism, Mentoring Matters centers on intentional mentorship for children from single-parent and under-resourced households. These children often face unique challenges — limited access to stable role models, academic support, and consistent encouragement — yet they also possess incredible resilience and potential.

Mentoring Matters exists to bridge that gap. Through partnerships with schools, youth programs, athletic organizations, and community nonprofits, my initiative connects young people with mentors who are trained to show up consistently, listen intentionally, and lead with compassion. Mentoring Matters emphasizes:
-
Positive role modeling
-
Academic and personal confidence
-
Healthy relationships and emotional support
-
Service-based leadership and youth empowerment
Whether through one-on-one mentoring, group programming, or youth leadership development, my goal is to ensure every child feels seen, supported, and capable of success.

As a student-athlete, dancer, and aspiring attorney, I have seen firsthand how mentorship changes lives — including my own. Mentoring Matters is not just about giving back; it’s about investing forward and creating a ripple effect that strengthens families, schools, and communities.
Because when young people have someone who believes in them, everything changes.
Much love,
Emma Marie
